Tanzania shine as CHAN 2024 kicks off in Dar es Salaam

The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicked off in style Friday night as hosts Tanzania beat Burkina Faso 2–0 in front of a packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Abdul Hamisi Suleiman gave Tanzania the lead just before halftime, calmly slotting home a penalty after a dominant spell by the Taifa Stars. The Azam FC striker’s goal ignited celebrations across the stadium.

In the 70th minute, Mohamed Hussein sealed the win with a powerful header. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but awarded after a VAR review.

The win puts Tanzania on top of Group B, which also includes the Central African Republic, Madagascar, and Mauritania. Only players active in their national leagues are eligible to feature in the tournament.

Mauritania face Madagascar on fSunday in the group’s next game. Meanwhile, Group A action moves to Nairobi, where DR Congo meet Zambia before hosts Kenya play Angola.

CHAN 2024, branded PAMOJA 2024, is being held across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, marking the first time the tournament is jointly hosted by three countries. Defending champions Senegal remain among the top contenders.

Uganda will kickoff their journey in Group C encounter against Algeria on Monday August 4th 2025 at the Namboole Stadium.
