We are back with Part 2 of the Nnalubaale Sports 2023 Rugby Awards and this time around, we are recognising the face that made the sport more popular.
This was easy. Ernest Akorebirungi.
If you are unfamiliar with names and short forms in Uganda, the “Akor” in Ernest’s name ending as “Akorebirungi” can get you offside.
Ernest has covered everything in Uganda rugby for the last 12 months. If you have played rugby in Uganda or for Uganda in the last 12 months, Ernest has either written about you or been in the microphone commentating your game. Above all, he knows your name.
He has travelled far and wide, covering Uganda’s brightest and best stars. In fact, his landlady has decided to suspend rent for the last few months because Ernest has rarely been in the country and has been doing the Lord’s work beyond borders – Jehovah’s Witness but for rugby.
A few years ago, Ernest tweeted about making it to France for the 2023 Rugby World Cup; as it happens, he made it to the big stage.
He also met Sonny Bill Williams, from whom he was cloned at the same stage, and Ernest’s accent has since changed. He’s not for every day. And we believe that is deserved.
Well done, Ernest. What a year!!
