The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) has taken a crucial step in strengthening the governance of professional boxing by officially introducing its Licensing Commission members to the Minister of Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, and the General Secretary of the National Council of Sports (NCS), Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel.

Leading the delegation was UBF President Moses Muhangi, who emphasized the importance of the meeting in ensuring clarity on professional boxing matters.

He explained that introducing the Licensing Commission to key government stakeholders would streamline engagement and reinforce regulatory oversight.

Beyond the formal introductions, the meeting delved into several pressing issues:

  1. Funding for UBF – With the federation’s activities expanding under the new sports law, Muhangi highlighted the need for increased financial support to sustain operations and develop the sport.
  2. International Affiliations – The discussion also touched on Uganda’s growing connections with global and continental boxing organizations such as the World Boxing Council (WBC), African Boxing Confederation (AFBC), and the World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF).

These affiliations open new opportunities for Ugandan boxers to compete at international levels.

  1. Boxing in Schools – A critical concern raised was the absence of boxing in schools. The UBF leadership underscored the need to reintroduce the sport at the grassroots level to nurture young talent and ensure the sport’s longevity.

With the new sports act in place, the UBF Licensing Commission will oversee professional boxing in Uganda, ensuring compliance with national regulations and international standards.

The commission’s formation follows the UBF’s recognition by the African Boxing Union (ABU), WBC, AFBC, and WPBF, further solidifying Uganda’s presence on the global boxing stage.

This milestone marks a significant advancement for the UBF, demonstrating its dedication to structuring and promoting professional boxing in the country.

By fostering strong partnerships with the government and international bodies, the federation is paving the way for Ugandan boxers to thrive both locally and internationally.
