UCU Cardinals staged a remarkable comeback to defeat YMCA 2-1 in the University Football League on Monday evening, moving to the top of the highly competitive Group C standings.
YMCA had a dream start, taking the lead just two minutes into the game when Hakim Kanaabi capitalized on Chadiga’s throw-in to silence the home crowd.
UCU responded with immediate pressure, with Geoffrey Oyaka using his pace to break past two defenders in the 10th minute, only to see his shot roll narrowly wide.

YMCA nearly doubled their lead in the 15th minute, but Lugyya Ashiraf’s curling effort was expertly pushed over the bar by UCU goalkeeper Mwidu Elton.
Three minutes before the half-hour mark, UCU found their breakthrough. Oyaka turned provider, delivering a perfect cross for Abiti Harry, who rose highest to head in the equalizer.
Just two minutes later, UCU won a penalty after a YMCA defender was penalized for a handball in the box.
Patrick Ogola made no mistake from the spot, completing the hosts’ comeback and giving them a 2-1 lead at halftime.

UCU continued to press after the break, with Abiti Harry firing over the crossbar 10 minutes into the second half.
YMCA goalkeeper Isabirye then pulled off a series of crucial saves, denying a powerful Oyaka shot at the hour mark and later punching Kyomuhendo’s effort off the line in the dying minutes.
YMCA had a late chance to equalize in the 82nd minute when Kiwanuka Pablo’s long-range free kick threatened the bottom corner, but Mwidu was quick to push it wide, ensuring UCU held onto their narrow lead.
The win sees UCU move to the top of Group C with 8 points from five games, one ahead of second-placed St. Lawrence, who are level on 7 points with the third-placed team.
Meanwhile, YMCA remains at the bottom of the table with 5 points.
