  • UCU Canons 59-54 JT Jaguars

In a tightly contested National Basketball League (NBL) men’s encounter on Wednesday night, the UCU Canons narrowly defeated JT Jaguars 59-54 at the YMCA court in Kampala.

The win sees both teams now sitting at 7-4 on the season, trailing the unbeaten Nam Blazers, who lead the league at 11-0.

The Canons leaned heavily on star forward Kayiira Joel, who delivered a commanding performance with a double-double 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Kayiira’s relentless hustle on both ends of the court proved decisive, as no other UCU player reached double digits in scoring.

The Jaguars, coached by Sudi Ulanga, were not short on fight. They started strong, leading the first quarter 18-14, but allowed UCU to claw back and take a one-point halftime advantage.

Ian Lubwama and Mark Were kept the Jaguars within reach throughout the contest, scoring 18 and 14 points, respectively.

Despite the Canons holding a narrow edge for much of the second half, both teams traded baskets down the stretch.

However, clutch free throws and defensive stops helped Nicholas Natuhereza’s Canons maintain composure and close out the win.

With the first round of the regular season now concluded, the league will pause ahead of the second round tip-off on May 30.
