When the 2023 Men’s National Basketball League tipped off, UCU Canons was among the teams to challenge defending champions City Oilers.

However, with one game to close the regular season, the Mukono-based side finds themselves in an unfamiliar position, fighting relegation in their final league game of this season.

The Canons family will hope to feed off their ladies’ sideshow in a one-sided affair in today’s first game featuring UCU Lady Canons with already relegated Nkumba Lady Marines.

If UCU Canons win, it will be a double over KCCA Panthers, a side they edged 90-80 in the first round, and then do what they do best next season – build a title contender squad from almost zero.

Having lost arguably their best players and Silverbacks faces in; Fayed Bbaale and Titus Lual who crossed to rivals City Oilers, the team that reached the last four last season is in a deep hole akin to the Kampala-Mukono traffic jam.

With the continuous loss of perfectly groomed players by a team led by Head Coach Nicholas Natuhereza, the Canons have been far from close to winning a championship on numerous occasions.

Having a disorganised camp, registering only nine wins from 21 games including a walkover defeat to Power when the side graced the fixture at Lugogo Indoor Arena with one set of jerseys is the reason they are here.

The big question is, will Canons avoid joining already relegated Rezlife Saints or can KCCA Panthers go on to win and seal their place in this year’s playoffs, tipping off next week?
