  • Mbarara University of Science and Technology 1-2 Kampala University

Two time champions Kampala University fought back to defeat Mbarara University of Science and Technology 2–1 on Thursday evening in Mbarara, stretching their lead at the top of Group A in the University Football League.

The hosts started strongly and were rewarded in the 18th minute when Richman Ainamani headed home Isiah Bigirwa’s cross to give MUST the lead.

MUST continued to threaten and nearly doubled their advantage, but Kampala University goalkeeper Tukwatanise produced two important saves to deny Ayebare Samuel.

The visitors also came close before the break, with Joel Mulwana striking the woodwork from distance.

Kampala University returned stronger after halftime and found the equalizer in the 53rd minute. Gideon Nsubuga’s inswinging corner drifted into the net to bring the visitors back into the game.

The match remained open as both sides pushed forward in search of the winner. Chances came at both ends, but the breakthrough arrived late.

With two minutes left on the clock, Joseph Kimera struck from the edge of the box after good work from Gilbert Wanuume to seal a crucial victory for the Flying Eagles.

The win moves Kampala University to 10 points from four matches, strengthening their position at the top of the group and edging them closer to the knockout stage.

For MUST, the defeat leaves them fourth with four points and more work to do in the remaining games.

University Football League action continues on Friday as Uganda Martyrs University face Mountains of the Moon University in another Group A clash.
