2025/26 University Football League | Tuesday March 10
- IUIU 2-4 Kumi University
Kumi University came from behind to beat Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) 4–2 on Tuesday evening in Mbale, ending the hosts’ hopes of reaching the knockout stage from Group E in the University Football League.
IUIU took the lead almost immediately after kickoff. Faizail Mumali’s dangerous cross forced Osama Ramathan into an own goal in the first minute as he attempted to clear, giving the hosts a dream start.
Kumi, however, grew into the game and began pushing for an equalizer. Christopher Nyongesa and Nathan Walwasa led the attack, but the visitors went into halftime trailing 1–0.
The second half turned the game around. Just two minutes after the restart, Nyongesa raced onto Semu Odeke’s through ball and fired in at the near post to level the score.
Kumi then took the lead in the 52nd minute after Nyongesa was fouled in the box by Shinkanga Emmanuel. Walwasa stepped up and calmly converted the penalty to make it 2–1.
IUIU responded six minutes later when Rodgers Kiggundu headed in Shinkanga’s delivery to restore parity at 2–2.
But Kumi were not done. Walwasa struck again in the 74th minute, heading home Alvin Mujasi’s corner to put the visitors back in front.
Olupot Simon sealed the victory in the 87th minute, finishing at the near post from Hamis Ramathan Isabirye’s cross to complete a memorable comeback.
The win also saw Kumi become the first team to score four goals at the Mbale ground in the history of the competition.
The result lifts Kumi to eight points in Group E, while IUIU remain on four points and are out of contention for a place in the knockout stage.
University Football League action continues on Wednesday in Lira, with MUBS visiting Lira University while Gulu University host St. Lawrence University.
