University Football League
- Muteesa 1 Royal 1-0 Africa Renewal
Muteesa I Royal University continued their strong home form with a narrow but hard-fought 1–0 victory over debutants Africa Renewal University at Kabira Arena on Monday.
The decisive moment came two minutes after halftime when midfielder Lutwama Ali calmly converted from the penalty spot, sending goalkeeper Mayinja Dirisa the wrong way to spark wild celebrations among the home fans.
Despite the loss, Africa Renewal impressed on their league debut with a spirited performance, especially in the first half when they controlled possession and looked more composed.
Their best chances came in the 26th minute, when a miscued effort denied them an early lead, and moments before the break when Ssegujja Marvin’s curling free kick forced a brilliant save from Ssemakula Ivan in Muteesa’s goal.
Muteesa struggled to find rhythm early on, with wingers Busuulwa Patrick and Sserugo Geoffrey kept quiet by Renewal’s disciplined fullbacks.
But a fiery halftime talk from coach George William Ssengabi reignited his side, leading to the pressure that earned the decisive penalty.
After taking the lead, Muteesa managed the game well, absorbing late pressure to preserve their slender advantage, a testament to their growing maturity this season.
The win keeps Muteesa unbeaten at home and reinforces Kabira Arena’s reputation as one of the toughest venues for visiting teams.
Meanwhile, Africa Renewal join the list of newcomers unable to win on debut, with only Mountains of the Moon University and Soroti University managing to earn a point in their first appearances.
Action continues Tuesday as Kabale University hosts Bugema University in another exciting encounter.
