Mountains of the Moon University edged Mbarara University of Science and Technology 1-0 in a hard fought University Football League Group A match on Friday at the Fort Portal Prisons Grounds.
Ibrahim Kirungi’s early second-half strike settled a tense contest in which MUST created several chances but failed to convert.
The visitors started brightly and nearly took the lead in the sixth minute when Ahikiriza Shebamu fired inches wide from the left.
MUST kept pushing. Bekunda Shafik beat Mugabi Bendowell in the 12th minute and tried his luck from distance, but goalkeeper Luwaga Paddy gathered easily.
Shafik came even closer six minutes later, striking the post after the hosts struggled to clear Marvin Ssebagala’s free kick.
The chances continued to come for MUST. In the 24th minute, Shafik dribbled past Kahwa Julius and set up Ssebagala at the edge of the box, but the captain blasted over.
Mountains of the Moon also had their moment before the break. Kirungi Ibrahim failed to capitalise on David Ahebwa’s through ball, chipping over the bar on the half-hour mark as the teams went into halftime goalless.
The breakthrough arrived seven minutes after the restart.
Ahebwa slipped a pass through the defence and Kirungi made no mistake, firing a powerful shot from the edge of the box to give the hosts the lead.
Ahebwa almost doubled the advantage in the 58th minute but was denied at the near post as rain began to fall in Fort Portal.
MUST pushed forward late on but could not find a way past Luwaga as the hosts held on for victory.
The win moves Mountains of the Moon to five points in Group A while MUST remain on four.
Action continues on Sunday when Kampala University host Kampala International University in Nsambya, while University of Kisubi face Uganda Martyrs University in Kisubi.
