St. Lawrence University (SLAU) showed remarkable resilience to beat Makerere University Business School (MUBS) 3–1 in a pulsating University Football League encounter on Thursday evening.

Reduced to ten men in the second half at Nakivubo Stadium, SLAU, three-time losing finalists kept their composure to claim all three points and climb to the top of Group D.

Munanira Derrick being shown red.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 10th minute when captain Ziraba Ronnie pounced on a defensive mistake, calmly slotting home from close range. Four minutes later, he nearly doubled the lead, only for MUBS’ defense to block his shot.

MUBS drew level in the 30th minute through captain Brian Katete, who danced past three defenders before curling a low shot into the far corner, a goal widely regarded as the match’s highlight.

After halftime, SLAU regained control. Kembo Osman Arafat restored the lead in the 61st minute with a header, despite MUBS’ offside protests.

Ten minutes later, SLAU faced a setback when Munanira Derrick received a straight red card, leaving the team a man down.

Undeterred, SLAU sealed the win when substitute Mugerwa Lawrence converted a penalty in the 79th minute, making it 3–1.

Post-match, SLAU coach Davis Nnono praised his team’s spirit:

The red card could have changed everything, but the boys showed character. We played with heart and discipline, and that made the difference,” he said.

The victory puts St. Lawrence atop Group D with three points, while MUBS sits bottom after their opening game.

Action continues on Friday as defending champions Nkumba University face ISBAT University, both seeking a first win.
