2025/26 University Football League | First Leg | Quarterfinal | Wednesday March 25

  • Uganda Martyrs University 2-1 Muteesa I Royal University

Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi, will carry a narrow advantage into the return leg after edging Muteesa I Royal University 2-1 in a tense quarterfinal first leg shaped by a fast start and late drama.

The hosts struck early, taking the lead in the sixth minute. Ogwang Francis delivered a precise ball to Lagu Richard, who kept his composure to finish and give Uganda Martyrs the perfect opening.

The early goal sparked a lively first half. Muteesa I Royal pushed forward in search of a response, but Uganda Martyrs’ defense held firm. Lutwama Ali made a crucial block to deny Allan Odong, while goalkeeper Kibungo Ashraf produced a fine save to push Twaha Bukenya’s long-range effort over the bar.

Despite the pressure, Uganda Martyrs went into the break 1-0 up.

After halftime, Muteesa I Royal returned with urgency but struggled to break through a disciplined backline. Opiyo Daniel led the defensive effort with key clearances, while the hosts sat deeper, waiting for chances on the counter.

As time ran down, both sides had opportunities but lacked the finishing touch. Busuulwa Patrick and Brian Rwothomio failed to convert for Uganda Martyrs, while Kayanja Joram kept Muteesa within reach.

The game seemed decided in stoppage time when Allan Odong doubled the lead, calmly lifting the ball over the goalkeeper and finishing into an empty net.

But there was still time for a twist. Muteesa I Royal won a late penalty, and Lutwama Ali converted to pull one back and secure an important away goal.

Uganda Martyrs walked away 2-1 winners, taking a slim edge into the second leg, with the tie still open.
