With over 500 athletes competing at the 2026 Second National Trials, impressive performances were evident, as some Ugandan athletes recorded times under the qualifying standard.
The Trials took place on Sunday, March 29, giving athletes from Uganda and a few from neighboring countries the chance to improve their speed.
In the course, athletes like Uganda Prisons sprinter Emmanuel Aboda, who ran 10 seconds and 44 microseconds, and ten 100-meter Ugandan sprinters managed to beat the Commonwealth qualifying time of 11 seconds and 17 microseconds for men.
In the men’s 400 meters, Erick Okwii also sped up at 46 seconds and 99 microseconds to lead his fellows, including Godfrey Chan Wengo, plus another 7 in finishing under the time of 51.36, a qualifying time for the race.
In the 800 meters Men, Shafiq Kirano and Peter Akemkwene were the men to put on performances recording 1:46.77 and 1:46.99 beating the time of 1:47
In women’s events, the impressive performances were recorded in the 5000 meters, where athletes like Charity Cherop finished at 15:17 and Yeko Chekwomoi finished at 15:24, both under the time of 15:25.
Meanwhile, there was also a big pool of athletes in different races that missed the qualifying time by just a few clicks, giving hope for Uganda Athletics and Ugandans that by the last qualifying round for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which will come in mid-June a month before the games, Uganda will have many options for selection.
