The Uganda Athletics team returns from the Islamic Solidarity Games held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a significant triumph of seven medals.
The team of 17 athletes that represented Uganda at the sixth Islamic Solidarity Games boarded Ethiopian Airlines on the night of November 21 after the games’ closing ceremony and stopped over in Addis Ababa, from where they flew to land in Kampala around midday.
In Riyadh, the team opened the campaign with Rebecca Chelangat scooping a gold medal in the women’s 10,000 meters, setting a time of 32:11.41.
Samuel Simba Cherop and Abel Chebet added silver and bronze in the men’s 10,000 meters. Halima Nakaayi added another silver in the women’s 800 meters after clocking 2:03.14, while Shida Leni finished with a bronze in the women’s 400 meters, running a time of 52.72.
The medal tally continued to yield, with Charity Cherop bagging a silver medal in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 15:47.01, as the teenager sealed her double, adding to her silver triumph in long distances to complete Uganda’s medal tally.
