Eight Ugandan badminton stars have set their sights on continental glory and Olympic berths as they depart for the All Africa Senior Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
The tournament, running from February 12th to 18th, will see Uganda challenge badminton powerhouses like Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa.
High Hopes for Olympic Qualification
The Ugandan team carries the hopes of a nation, with athletes aiming to collect crucial ranking points towards qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

James Kasumba, representing the National Council of Sports, expressed confidence in the team’s potential, highlighting the opportunity to earn points “that could propel them to Paris.”
Fadilah Shamika Leads the Charge
Ranked Africa’s No. 1 and world No. 113, Shamika spearheads the Ugandan challenge. Looking to widen the gap with her continental rival Johanita Scholtz from South Africa, she emphasizes the team’s rigorous preparation under their coaches.

Strong performances in the Thomas Cup (men) and Uber Cup (women) categories offer a potential 400-point boost to individual rankings.
Historic Tournament, Local Success
These championships, dating back to 1948-49 (with the Uber Cup added in 1956-57), have witnessed Uganda’s recent success.
In the 2022 edition hosted by Uganda itself, the team claimed a silver medal in the women’s team event, with Husina Kobugabe adding an individual bronze.
Crucial Road to Paris
With the World Badminton Federation ranking update on May 1st dictating Olympic qualification, Ugandan players have a busy schedule ahead.

Following the All Africa event, they will compete in the Uganda International, Germany Open, All Africa, Orleans Master, Swiss Open, and other tournaments to maximize their point accumulation.

The Ugandan contingent comprises players Muzafaru Lubega, Amos Muyanja (captain), Expendito Emmundu, Agustus Owiny, Gladys Mbabazi, Tracy Naluwooza, Husina Kobugabe, and Fadilah Shamika Mohammed.
