A contingent of 14 members, comprising 8 players and officials, has been sent to Kenya to participate in the East Region Baseball 5 championship.
The competition will start on Saturday, 5th April with Uganda aiming to at least finish second to commence to main Africa qualifier, where the five regions will be represented by their top two.
While flagging off the team on Thursday morning, assistant general secretary Sarah Chellangate urged the team members of the team to focus on making Uganda proud and making friends outside.
“As you are going outside there, we are sending you to win this championship and make us proud. The General Secretary of the National Council of Sports has sent me to assure you that the council is ready to fund all sports disciplines therefore, you go and qualify for the World Cup and leave others to the Council.
“Also, you go there and make beneficial friends may be they will be of importance in future.”
Uganda Baseball Association chairman Johnbosco Ssempa called the nation to turn its focus on Baseball 5 starting from school level.
“We are going to this championship with only one purpose and that is to win it, but also I call up Ugandans to give Baseball 5 a chance, I call schools to start embracing the special sport, it is special because it is the only sport which can accommodate male and female.”
The team is going to be captained by Barnard Eluk who used a few words.
“We are going and return as champions. We are well prepared to challenge and overcome any team at the championship.”
The East Region of African Baseball Federation comprises Uganda, Kenya, Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania, Somalia, Rwanda and Burundi.
