Uganda’s chess team has finally secured its first wins at the FIDE World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad, which is currently being held in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
The team, which is made up of three squads, had a rough start to the competition, with Uganda 1, 2 and 3, losing their first two rounds to India, Switzerland, and Netherlands C, respectively.
However, Uganda 2, composed of Shiloh Tandeka, Ethan Kigundu, Mathew Mwase, and Tatiana Zuri, was able to break the team’s losing streak in the third round with a 3.5-0.5 victory over Kenya.
Uganda 1, which consists of Arthur Mwase, Edwin Pido, Nygaard Ajiri, and Caroline Nabirye, then followed up with a 4-0 win over Cayman Islands in the fourth round.
As of press time, the fifth round of the tournament is still ongoing. Uganda 1 is facing Chinese Taipei 1, Uganda 2 is playing against Thailand 2, and Uganda 3 is up against Malaysia.
All three teams are playing with the black pieces.
