Uganda’s fairytale run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday after a narrow 1-0 loss to defending champions Senegal at the Mandela National Stadium.

Buoyed by their impressive group-stage performance, the Cranes came into the quarterfinals full of belief but were undone by Oummar Ba’s 62nd-minute strike.

The Senegalese forward capitalized on a defensive lapse and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa, silencing a packed Namboole.

Uganda started strongly, dominating early possession and creating chances, with Karim Watambala forcing a fine save from Senegal’s Marc Diouf.

However, their momentum dipped after key forward Jude Ssemugabi was stretchered off with a thigh injury.

The Cranes pushed for an equalizer late on. Arnold Odong fired over the bar in the 83rd minute, while Gavin Kizito and Usama Arafat came inches away from connecting with Herbert Achayi’s cross in stoppage time.

Despite their spirited fight, Uganda joined fellow co-hosts Kenya and Tanzania in exiting at the quarterfinal stage.

Elsewhere, Sudan edged Algeria 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Zanzibar and will face Madagascar in the semifinals at Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium, Dar es Salaam.
