Uganda Cranes drop in FIFA Rankings after early AFCON exit

Uganda Cranes have slipped three places in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings, falling to 88th globally following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco.

The rankings, released on January 19, 2026, reflect performances in recent competitive matches, with AFCON results carrying significant weight.

While hosts Morocco climbed to eighth and Senegal rose to 12th after strong tournaments, Uganda moved in the opposite direction after an early exit.

The Cranes had arrived in Morocco with cautious optimism after a solid qualification campaign that secured their eighth AFCON appearance. However, results on the pitch failed to match expectations.

Drawn in Group C with Nigeria, Tunisia and Tanzania, Uganda struggled to gain momentum. They opened with a 1–1 draw against Tanzania, a match that could have been won had a late penalty been converted.

Defeat followed against Tunisia, and Uganda were unable to match the quality of their group rivals.

One point from three matches left them bottom of the group and eliminated at the group stage.

That underwhelming showing cost Uganda valuable ranking points, especially as teams that progressed to the knockout stages were rewarded with significant gains.

The contrast highlighted how fine the margins are in African football, where success at major tournaments directly shapes global standing.

The slide has reignited debate about the direction of the national team.

Analysts have questioned tactical decisions and missed chances, while others have urged patience, calling for investment in youth development and long-term planning.

With the 2027 AFCON qualifiers on the horizon, the focus now shifts to rebuilding confidence and consistency.

Improved results will be essential if the Cranes are to climb back up the rankings and reassert themselves on the continental stage.
