Uganda Cranes interim coach Morley Byekwaso has urged his team to improve in the final third after they were defeated 1-0 by Mali in a friendly match on Friday.

The Cranes had a number of chances to score, but they were unable to convert them. Lassine Sinayoko scored the only goal of the game for Mali in the 74th minute.

“We need to try to improve in the final third,” Byekwaso said after the match.

“We didn’t make good movements in that position and it affected us. But apart from that I feel the boys did a good job and they lived up to my expectations.”

Byekwaso also warned his players that they need to put in an extra effort if they are to be consistent on the national team.

“To be on the national team you have to be working hard,” he said.

“This starts from your clubs where you play from. When you shine then you will be considered for the national side. The national team also improves on your career as a player.”

The Cranes will now shift focus to another build match against Zambia on Tuesday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Byekwaso believes the friendlies will help his team prepare for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers that start next month.

Uganda is in Group G of the World Cup Qualifiers with Algeria, Guinea, Mozambique, Botswana and Somalia.
