2025 CHAN Tournament
- Uganda 3-0 Guinea
Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, erupted on Saturday evening as Uganda Cranes swept past Guinea 3–0 in the African Nations Championship (CHAN), claiming their first-ever home victory in the tournament.
Before kick-off, talk centered on a surprise move, head coach Morley Byekwaso taking the captain’s armband from Allan Okello and giving it to defender Rogers Torach. Byekwaso said it was to “take the burden off Okello’s shoulders.” It worked.
Okello, wearing number 21, was everywhere. His quick corner in the 30th minute found Joel Sserunjogi, who crossed for debutant Reagan Mpande to head home the opener.
After the break, Guinea pushed back, but a VAR review confirmed Okello had been fouled in the box.
He calmly scored the penalty in the 58th minute, then deep into stoppage time set up Ivan Ahimbisibwe for the third.
The win was a welcome response after the 3–0 loss to Algeria, reigniting hopes of progressing from Group C. It’s only Uganda’s second CHAN win ever.
Next up is Niger on Monday, August 11, with momentum and belief firmly behind them.
