Uganda Cranes beat Somalia 2-0 on Monday night at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive.

The win takes Uganda to 15 points in Group G, level with Mozambique, as the qualifiers enter the final stretch.

Allan Okello opened the scoring in the 5th minute, calmly converting a penalty after Abdul Azizi Kayondo was fouled in the box.

The Cranes doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Jude Ssemugabi tapped in a rebound after Somalia goalkeeper Mohammud Jama failed to hold Steven Mukwala’s header from Kayondo’s cross.

Despite dominating possession, Uganda wasted several chances, with Mukwala and Ssemugabi missing opportunities to seal a bigger win.

Coach Paul Put will, however, be pleased with Burton Albion right-back Toby Peter Sibbick’s solid debut, the growing defensive partnership of Elio Capradossi and John Jordan Obita, and another strong display from star man Okello.

Elsewhere, Mozambique beat Botswana to join Uganda on 15 points, while Algeria remain top with 19 after a goalless draw with Guinea in Morocco.

Uganda now turns focus to the final rounds, where every point will be vital in their chase for a historic World Cup spot.
