On 18th September, Uganda Cricket Association distributed a press release indicating among other changes in the Association, the resignation of Michael Nuwagaba from his position as Chairman.

A lot was speculated as to why Nuwagaba who is just seven months into his second term in office had decided to resign.

One of the theories was that Nuwagaba threw in the towel because of his disagreement with some of the board members on not renewing Cricket Cranes head coach Laurence Mahatlane‘s contract.

Mahatlane will be leaving at the end of his contract in October, and he has already been replaced by Jackson Ogwang as interim coach.

During the press conference that was held on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 in Logogo, Nuwagaba revealed why he had originally tendered in his resignation and that he would now be staying on as chairman until the end of his tenure.

“I had put in the request to resign, mainly for career reasons,” Nuwagaba said.

“Professionally, my time is getting more limited. However, as UCA, we are very keen in being compliant with all the rules that govern us and as well as comply with all the rules of the government.”

“On advise from the government, currently only an AGM can approve my resignation. That means, I had to have my request turned down.”

“I’m still the chairman of Uganda Cricket Association until the next AGM. If I still think I should stand down, then I can put in the request to the AGM, but for now I’m still the chairman until the end of my term.”

Nuwagaba’s second term will end in 2025.
