Uganda Cup 2023: Impis And Rams Meet In The Makerere Derby

It is always chaos and class in session when the Makerere-based Impis and the Mulago-affiliated Rams meet.

In one of the fiercest rivalries and derbies in Ugandan rugby, Impis walk into the game as slight favourites having won their group – in which they bettered first place hopefuls, Jinja Hippos.

The Lifeguard Rams are not far behind in this one. In a group where they were poised to come third behind Heathens and Walukuba Barabrians, they walked into the Barbarians’ house, knocked the latter’s teeth out, and had them serve them a hot cup of coffee.

The lack of underdog status in the Makerere derby always serves as a hot affair, and with Nsekuye Henry away, the Rams understand that it is one less playmaker to contend with.

Nonetheless, Impis weren’t given a chance in the pool stage games owing to the transfer exits, but like the traditional giant they are, they stood on their business and topped the group.

The Impis completed a Premiership double against the Rams to avenge the sweep for the season before last.

Talking points

Emmanuel Kibirige has completed his soul searching and admitted that his legs have slowed down, and he’s traded the backline for a reinforcement role in the backline to hold the Rams pack together. Michael Kalyango and Joseph Kana must be on their best behaviour to get the backline firing.

Jonathan Magezi is an underrated playmaker, and the Impis faithful hope the lad keeps getting underestimated as he inspires the Makerere side to more victories.

He’s aided in leadership by older heads like Pius Mpoza, who many argued deserved a chance with the national team in 2023, Kennedy Muhumuza and Amos “Dr. Love” Asimire.

The Makerere Derby also pits two former playmakers, now coaches, against each other. Impis coach Syrus Ssebuliba announced his rival after inspiring Impis to a 5/5 start to the 2023 Premiership.

Lumu Richard of the Lifeguard is a household name that kitted up for the national team at some point.

Lest we forget, our very own Sama Emmanuel, in a twist of fate, looks to have traded the whistle for a mouth guard and headgear.
