The Nile Rapids were crowned 2023 Uganda Cup Cup champions for the women’s game on Saturday afternoon.
The Nile Rapids came back from 17-10 down in the first half to beat 2022 Champions, Avengers, 25-17 and be crowned Champions.
Tina Akello was the star of the afternoon, scoring all Nile Raids points, a try, a drop goal, a conversion and five penalties. Akello only missed one shot with her boot the entire game.

It was the first time the Rapids were playing in the Uganda Cup, and definitely the first time in the finale, and Coach Ronald Odakai couldn’t hide his excitement.
“Watching this team grow from the nine ladies in our first training session to becoming champions has been a pleasure. I am glad this group has reached here,” said Coach Ronald.
The two teams met on the opening weekend of the Uganda Cup, and Avengers were runaway 38-06 winners.

“I didn’t see this happen in my wildest dreams. The rugby community was on the Avengers’ side in the buildup, and they had online support, too, but I am glad we have won,” exclaimed Tina Akello.
“We trained hard this week and had to make the coach and the Eastern Uganda region at large proud.”
