As KCCA FC travels to Kyamate Stadium for a quarterfinal clash in the Uganda Cup, one burning question looms: Does Kaaro Karungi have what it takes to deepen KCCA’s wounds?

It’s been a turbulent spell for the Lugogo giants, whose Uganda Premier League campaign has gone off the rails. With three straight defeats, including a narrow 1-0 loss to URA, KCCA’s hopes for league glory have all but vanished. The pressure now shifts squarely to the Uganda Cup, perhaps their last realistic shot at silverware this season.

“This is an important game for the club, especially at this stage of the season,” said interim head coach Jackson Magera, speaking to the club’s media.

“The boys are in good spirits and ready to fight. We know it won’t be easy away from home, but we’re prepared to get the job done.”

But it won’t be easy, not in Ntungamo and certainly not against a Kaaro Karungi side that has captured the imagination of local fans with their giant-slaying Cup run.

The Big League outfit, led by seasoned tactician Richard Makumbi is enjoying a dream ride in this year’s tournament. From brushing aside Karuguza United in the Round of 64 to dispatching Busia Young and most impressively, humbling top-flight side UPDF 3-0 in the Round of 16, Kaaro Karungi have proven they’re not just here to make up the numbers, they’re here to compete.

With home advantage, momentum and nothing to lose, the Ibanda-based underdogs will be eager to add KCCA’s name to their list of victims.

On the other hand, while KCCA’s league form has been far from convincing, their Cup performances have been impressive. A 4-0 demolition of Rwenzori Lions in the previous round reminded fans of their firepower and pedigree.

However, their trip to Ntungamo comes at a cost Etienne Katenga, Filbert Obenchan, Sadat Anaku and Isa Mubiru are all ruled out due to injury and did not travel with the squad.

That leaves Magera’s side vulnerable, facing not just a fearless opponent but also the weight of expectation and growing desperation to rescue a season threatening to spiral.

For Kaaro Karungi, this match is a golden opportunity. For KCCA, it’s a test of resilience.
