Makerere Impis have withdrawn from the 2025 Uganda Cup just hours before kickoff, dealing an unexpected blow to the country’s flagship rugby tournament set to start this Saturday, October 18.
The university side was scheduled to open against defending champions Heathens, but in a letter to Uganda Rugby Union Chief Technical Officer, Ramsey Olinga, club Patron Dr. Philip Adruf Katumba confirmed their withdrawal.
“I regret to inform you that, due to unforeseen financial constraints, Makerere Impis Rugby Club will be withdrawing from the Uganda Cup with immediate effect,” wrote Dr. Katumba.
“However, we will proceed with the University 7s tournament as planned the following day. I apologize for the short notice and any inconvenience caused.”
The decision dampens the excitement surrounding the Cup’s long-awaited return after a year’s break caused by funding challenges. In 2024, clubs filled the void with their own invitational, the Rugby Masters Cup which Heathens eventually won.
This year’s edition initially featured 20 men’s teams and 8 women’s sides from across the country. Impis’ exit reduces the men’s field to 19.
The women’s competition has also been hit, with reigning 15s champions Black Pearls pulling out earlier this month, citing player unavailability and financial strains just like Kyadondo based side Thunderbirds.
Despite the withdrawals, the Uganda Cup will go on. The group stage runs from October 18 to November 15, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout rounds.
In the women’s category, Nile Rapids will be left to fight for the crown against a strong chasing pack that includes Avengers and Ewes.
