Uganda Cup | R32 | Sunday February 22
- KCCA FC 1-0 Mbarara City FC
A captain rose above everyone else, met the ball in mid-air and, with one brave dive, sent KCCA FC into the Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 16.
Fillbert Obenchan’s powerful header separated KCCA from a stubborn Mbarara City side as the hosts claimed a hard fought 1-0 win in the Round of 32 at Phillip Omondi Stadium on Sunday evening.
Just before half time, with tension growing in the stands, Ashraf Mugume curled in a teasing free kick.
Obenchan timed his run perfectly, threw himself forward and buried a diving header past the goalkeeper. It was a goal of conviction and leadership.
Mbarara City refused to back down. They pressed and searched for a way through, but KCCA’s defence held firm when it mattered.
Clearances were cheered, interceptions greeted with relief as the hosts protected their slim lead through a nervy second half.
KCCA thought they had sealed it late on when substitute Bright Anukani scored, but the flag went up for offside in the build-up. The single goal would have to do.
At the final whistle, KCCA became the first team to reach this year’s Round of 16.
However the round of 32 matches continue for the rest of the week starting on Tuesday February 24.
