Uganda’s outstanding 2024–2025 schools sports calendar reaches its international peak this week as three schools; International School of Uganda (ISU), ARCONS International School, and Mengo Senior Secondary School, depart for the ISF U15 World School Volleyball Championship in Shangluo, China.
The teams were officially flagged off on Tuesday at the National Council of Sports, a moment that underscored Uganda’s growing global presence in school sports. The tournament runs from December 4th to 13th.

The flag-off brought together key figures in school sports, including USSSA President Justus Mugisha, NCS official Milton Chebet, USSSA CEO Christopher Mugisha Banage, and executive members Grace Violah Kyolaba and Douglas Kabwegyere.
USSSA President Justus Mugisha praised Uganda’s progress, noting the country’s top ranking in ISF participation.

“Uganda is currently ranked number one in ISF participation, and the performance has been exceptional. We’ve achieved this because we are organized right from the grassroots,” he said.
At the send-off, national leaders, parents, and officials emphasized discipline, unity, and the responsibility of carrying the Ugandan flag.
Rev. Canon Dr. Duncans Mugumya, Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports and Chief Guest, reminded the athletes of the weight of their mission.

“As you head for these games, remember you are representing forty five million Ugandans,” he said.
He urged them to play with heart and integrity.
“Be patriotic and represent your country with love. Be responsible for everyone because we are one team. And to the leaders, protect our children.”
NCS Assistant General Secretary (Technical) Milton Chebet applauded Uganda’s progress over the year and challenged the youngsters to push even further.

“We have had a successful sporting journey as a country. Your task is to keep the candle burning and raise our flag high in China.”
Parents also shared their pride. Speaking on their behalf, Els De Temmerman said,

“I hope this will be great exposure for our kids. I look forward to a successful journey in China both on and off the courts.”
The team will be led by Assistant Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports Sammy Odong, with USSSA Executive Committee Member Douglas Kabwegyere serving as Assistant Leader of Delegation.
As the three schools head to Shangluo, they carry the hopes of a proud nation and the momentum of a historic season.

Uganda continues to rise as a powerhouse in school sports, and this championship offers another platform to showcase discipline, talent, and the unmistakable Ugandan spirit.
Team captain Lara Van Hecke summed up the mood with confidence:
“I’m happy, and I know the team is ready for the challenge ahead. We are going to make Uganda proud.”
