If you were not careful, you would think the Safari 7s were happening in Uganda because the Black-Yellow-Red took over everywhere you wanted to look.
First and foremost, the Lady Cranes won the whole thing in a style that was a perfect gift to the Isebantu and Inhebantu of Busoga Kingdom. Baaba Kyabazinga, webale kutulaga Maama. Obusoga Bulaire. Baaba ofunvughe.
The lady Cranes had been called out for being a team that depended on individual brilliance earlier on day two.
Still, after a stern team talk from the technical team, we had a different spice and everything nice from the ladies, first disposing of the babies and then their Mommas to win the Safari 7s.
Beautiful ball movement in the final would make you think they had Pep Guardiola and Fabien Galthie on call.
Skipper Peace Lekuru would end the tournament as the Most Valuable Player and Top Try Scorer. In our books, she was dominant and relentless, and we believe they should make her Governor in Kenya. What a performer!!
Unity Namulala’s Rapid rise from the Nile is something we will enjoy for a long time. Buckle up!
Rugby Cranes
The gentlemen, 2022 Africa 7s Champs, would feel undone by how their semi-final ended, but they made up for that with Uganda’s most composed game against Germany.
The lads were in the lead from the get-go until the final whistle to claim the bronze. After 26 outings, this is the Men’s best-ever finish at the Safari 7s.
The Safari 7s have given us Roy Bartholomew Kizito, first of his name, beater of defenders, the voice of the try line, and ambassador of the Pirates ghetto.
To wear Philip Wokorach’s famous #5 jersey and emerge as top scorer is a feat wilder than Roy would have dreamt about. Even when the tempest rages, we’re sure you’ll sail just fine, Roy.
We’re all in agreement that Aaron Ofoywroth is Owakabi. Then, he had a weekend like that, and we started to think he had more Owakabi.
We’ve all watched Aaron grow from a live wire and card magnet to the glue and playmaker of all his rugby teams, emerging as the top points scorer at the Safari 7s. We stan, a leader!!
Kenya, just like Rwanda, is about to become another district of Uganda because of how accessible it has become to head there and support our sports teams.
The stands were loud with Uganda’s rugby choirs – from all the clubs. The fans have decided that wherever their teams go, they shall follow; next up, Bermuda Triangle.
The online warfare was predominantly Ugandan, and our Kenyan counterparts needed to pick a lesson or two.
Just two years ago, we were struggling with rugby content. Today, we are sure the Nnalubaale Sports, Kawowo, Fat Cats and even Vision Group will be circulating timely content for consumption.
Ugandan rugby enjoyed a dominant weekend. Long may this continue.
