Uganda Cranes will face a must-win situation when they take on Somalia on Tuesday at the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Morocco at 4pm.
The match marks the second round of the FIFA World Cup African qualifiers for the 2026 tournament.
Uganda comes into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Guinea in their opening match, while Somalia lost 3-1 to Algeria. Both teams will be eager to secure their first win of the campaign.
Cranes coach Paul Put acknowledges the challenge that lies ahead, stating, “The response from the players is very good. The discipline and mentality is good. I don’t think we deserved to lose the game against Guinea. The players are ready to show again the good performance.”
“In Africa there is no easy game. It will be a difficult game since Somalia are at home. If we can bring the same character and motivation I know we can pick up a result. We have a good chance to get results.”
Uganda is currently placed in Group G, with Algeria leading the table on six points. Guinea and Mozambique follow with three points each, although Mozambique has played an extra game. Botswana, Uganda, and Somalia occupy fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively, with no points.
Captain Aucho Khalid, who played a crucial role in the midfield against Guinea, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure a positive result.
He commented, “The players are motivated and training has been good. Like coach says there is no easy game but we shall fight for the points. We lost the first game but not the battle. With support of different stakeholders I know we shall deliver.”
Uganda will need to address certain areas of concern if they are to emerge victorious against Somalia. These include goalkeeping, striking, and defensive lapses.
Historically, Uganda has enjoyed a dominant record against Somalia, winning all previous encounters. However, given the recent progress made by the Ocean Stars, securing a win on Tuesday will not be an easy task.
