The Uganda Gazelles suffered a huge 62-88 defeat to Mozambique in the classification game of the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket on Thursday at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Gazelles needed to grab the fifth position having suffered a quarterfinal defeat to Rwanda earlier on Wednesday.

However, Mozambique proved a mightier opponent as they forced Uganda into 30 turnovers which they hugely capitalized on.

Mozambique made a strong start and led 26-13 at the end of the first quarter, and held a nine-point lead at halftime.

Despite a stronger showing by the Gazelles in the third quarter, Mozambique still led it 23-22.

The final stretch had Uganda back struggling as they settled for just seven points in the final quarter, with Mozambique running away to book a fifth place date with Cameroon.

Jannon Otto and Claire Lamunu led the way for the Gazelles as they managed 18 and 12 points, respectively.

Uganda will be looking for a decent wrap of the tournament, eyeing a seventh finish against Guinea.
