Uganda’s hopes for a strong finish at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket took another hit on Friday after a 76–58 loss to Mozambique in Abidjan.
It’s the Gazelles’ second straight defeat, meaning they’ll once again play for seventh place, just like in 2023.
Still shaken from their quarterfinal loss to South Sudan, the team looked flat from the start. Mozambique jumped out to a 21–14 lead after the first quarter and pushed it to 17 before halftime.
Uganda showed some fight in the third. Hope Akello led the charge with a game-high 18 points, and Peruth Nyamwenge added 10 and 5 assists as the Gazelles cut the gap to 51–49 with under three minutes left in the third quarter.
But Mozambique shut the door with a 10–0 run to end the period and never looked back. Stefania Chiziane scored 16, while Leia Dongue and Chanaya Pinto each had 14. Ingvild Mucauro chipped in 12.
Uganda now faces hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday in the 7th-place playoff. Mozambique moves on to battle Cameroon for fifth.
