Uganda’s Junior Silverbacks have stormed the 2023 FIBA U16 African Championship slated for July 12-23 in Tunisia.

The feat was reached after the team clinched Zone Five Championship in Kigali, Rwanda, having beaten Tanzania 116-49 in a dominant performance at LDK Gymnasium on Friday.

In a dominant victory, Tejan Joel Rugate and Zuri Owiny scored 21 and 20 points respectively while Aaron Victor Makmot added 17 points apiece.

It was initially a four-team competition including Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi, but the latter was later banned for using over-age players.

In the tournament, the young Silver-bucks got off with a hugely contested victory over hosts Rwanda 59-57.

After two years away, Uganda now returns to the final tournament for the second time having made their debut in Cairo back in 2021.

Egypt, Mali, Algeria, Angola, Guinea, Morocco, Nigeria and hosts Tunisia are the other countries that have already qualified for the finals.
