Uganda Martyrs’ chances of progressing to quarterfinals were dented a blow following their 1all draw with Kabale University in the University Football league.

Midfielder Akbar Ssentongo had given Uganda Martyrs a 16th minute lead before Turyasingura Monisuri levelled matters in the 25th minute for the home side.

Martyrs top Group A with 10 points, one above second placed Bugema. Kabale has four points in the third position while University of Kisubi is bottom with no point.

Martyrs now have to beat University of Kisubi and get at least a point against Bugema to qualify.

More University football action

Elsewhere, Kampala International University (KIU) have promised an attacking approach when they host Uganda Christian University (UCU) in the University Football league on Wednesday in Nsambya.

KIU are third in Group D with three points from three games and their coach Geoffrey Akabwai says they will use home advantage.

“We have to be decisive and go for it. There will be no sitting back waiting for the other team’s mistakes. We have to take risks, otherwise we’ll be going nowhere,” Akabwai said.

“If we lose this game we shall be mathematically out of contention so I prefer to take the risk to give us a better chance of going to the next round.”

“We need to win, we don’t want to go to the final games only playing to finish the matches, we need to play with a purpose needing to win all our remaining games.

However UCU who are unbeaten in their opening three games will be seeking to register back to back wins against KIU, a side they beat 2-0 recently.

Their coach Kintu Mwera revealed his side is full of confidence to maintain their winning streak.

“We have had a good week of training and we need to continue with the good results. There is a good energy in the group,” Kintu said.

“Sometimes players have to play off the cuff, try and create things for the team. That’s what I’ll always try to do and also score for fun,” Kintu added.
