Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi (UMU) continued their dominant run in the Pepsi University Football League, completing the group stage unbeaten after a commanding 2-0 victory over the University of Kisubi (UNIK) on Monday evening.

With their spot in the knockout stage already secured, the two-time champions showed no signs of slowing down, sealing their dominance in Group E with 16 points out of a possible 18 from six matches.

The match at Nkozi started with Uganda Martyrs asserting early control, launching waves of attacks. However, the UNIK defence, marshalled by goalkeeper Kibukuna Julius, stood firm in the first half.

UMU’s Obedgiu Ronald Laker had a golden chance in the 20th minute but sent his shot wide, while UNIK’s Bukenya Peter came close at the half-hour mark, narrowly missing the target.

Kibukuna then pulled off a string of remarkable saves, denying Calvin Peter Emayu in a one-on-one situation and producing a superb double stop against Chiengkuoth Par Jiek and Emayu just before halftime.

The second half saw UMU finally break through five minutes after the restart. Obedgiu Ronald Laker connected perfectly with an Agamile Ivan cross, slotting home the opening goal.

Despite Kibukuna’s continued brilliance, denying Kaija Sunny’s first touch effort and later recovering from a spill to stop Ogwang’s shot, the visitors eventually conceded again.

In the 63rd minute, Kayondo Joseph doubled the hosts’ lead with a powerful strike from the edge of the box after receiving Kidega’s cross.

UMU nearly made it three, but Magezi Reagan’s block and Kibukuna’s reflexes kept the scoreline respectable. Kayondo had another late chance but fired over the bar, sealing a 2-0 victory for the home side.

With this win, Uganda Martyrs University capped off an impressive group-stage campaign, finishing unbeaten and storming into the knockout rounds as clear favourites.

Meanwhile, the University of Kisubi’s struggles continued, as they remained at the bottom of Group E with just one point.

With their championship pedigree and current unstoppable form, UMU now will have to set their sights on the next stage, eager to reclaim the University Football League title.
