The Uganda Nile Warriors U20 volleyball team has traveled to Egypt to compete in the Under 20 Volleyball Africa Nations Championship. This crucial tournament serves as a qualifier for the U21 Volleyball World Championship to be held in Qatar later this year.
A 17-member Uganda volleyball team contingent was officially flagged off on Thursday, September 11, at Cooper Chimney in Lugogo. The team, comprising 12 talented U20 volleyball players and 5 officials, will be in Egypt for the championship, which runs until September 20.
At the flag-off event, NCS Assistant General Secretary Milton Chebet urged the players to be “ruthless” in representing Uganda. NCS Sports Officer Anie Nankya also emphasized the importance of balancing sports with education.
According to sources, the National Council of Sports (NCS) provided transport for the team to the airport, where they caught their flight at 6 p.m. Uganda Volleyball Association’s Sadik Nasiwu encouraged the players to concentrate on their game and not be intimidated by opposing teams.
The Uganda Nile Warriors are set to face tough competition from various African zones, with teams from neighboring Kenya and Rwanda among the confirmed participants. To secure a spot in the U21 Volleyball World Championship in Qatar, the Ugandan team must finish in the top three at the Africa Nations Championship.
Upon their arrival in Egypt, the team, led by Coach Joshua Osiya, will attend a technical meeting and the tournament draws. Coach Osiya is assisted by Boaz Turyahabwe and Edward Bwenje. Peterson El Nino is the team captain.
