To commemorate the 5th annual Fair Play Day, the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) hosted a program aimed at fostering ethical values in sports among young athletes. The event, held on September 7, 2024, brought together students and teachers from 15 schools in Kampala.
The program, led by Annet Nakamya, focused on aligning with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) mission to promote fair competition and prevent cheating.
By engaging with young athletes, the UOC hopes to cultivate a generation of sportspersons who prioritize integrity and adhere to established rules.
Beatrice Ayikoru, a representative from the UOC, emphasized the detrimental effects of cheating in sports. She highlighted the consequences faced by athletes caught engaging in unethical practices, such as doping or falsifying age.
Ayikoru also drew a parallel between cheating in sports and the broader societal issue of corruption, underscoring the importance of upholding fair play principles in all aspects of life.
Participant Abagail Ndagire Mawanda expressed her appreciation for the program, stating that it taught her the importance of fair play and sportsmanship. She urged fellow athletes to refrain from cheating and compete with integrity.
As Uganda grapples with challenges related to selfishness and corruption, programs like this offer hope for a brighter future.
