The Uganda national badminton team is one step away from the All Africa Badminton Senior Championships medal bracket.
The Ugandan team (men and women) faces an Egyptian hurdle as they aim to reach the semifinals this afternoon in Douala, Cameroon.
Uganda lost 4-2 to Egypt in the women’s and men’s singles and the women’s doubles but registered victories in the mixed and men’s doubles in the previous edition.
Brian Kasirye, Uganda’s top seed, partnered with Fadilah Shamika Mohammed Rafi to defeat Adham Hatem and Elgamal Doha Hany in straight sets 14-21, 16-21 in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2023.
Shamika went on to win the gold medal in the women’s singles. Despite not having her partner Kasirye at these games, she and the team are confident of progressing to the last four.
Uganda has so far played two games, winning one and losing the other. A 4-1 victory against Reunion opened their campaign, followed by a similar defeat to South Africa.
Head Coach Ivan Karimunda told Nnalubaale Sports that a better game plan is the answer to Uganda’s quest for a semifinal slot.
“There are a few mistakes we need to correct. The losses were narrow because we ran out of steam, and that’s something we are going to work on.”
