Uganda secured a crucial 2-1 victory over South Sudan in Juba, creating a gap of 3 points at the top of Group K in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Kitara FC’s Denis Omedi opened the scoring for Uganda in the 15th minute, but South Sudan’s Juma Yohana equalized just six minutes later.

The match remained tied until the 66th minute when Alfred Leku deflected Jude Ssemugabi’s shot into his own net, giving Uganda the decisive goal.

With this win, Uganda has accumulated 10 points from four games, having defeated both South Sudan and Congo Brazaville at home and securing a valuable draw against South Africa. South Africa, who has played three games, is currently facing Congo Brazaville in their fourth match of the campaign.

Uganda’s impressive performance against South Sudan follows their 1-0 victory over the same opponent in the first leg. South Africa, on the other hand, dominated Congo Brazaville with a 5-0 win in their previous encounter.

The race for the top spot in Group K is heating up, with Uganda narrowly leading South Africa by three points. The teams will face off again on November 11th in a potentially decisive match.

Uganda’s last appearance at the AFCON tournament was in 2019, hosted by Egypt. Their best performance at the competition came in 1978 when they reached the final, losing to Ghana.

The Cranes are aiming to qualify for their eighth AFCON tournament overall.
