Uganda emerged champions in both boys and girls in the CAF African Schools Football Championship in the CECAFA Qualifiers.

Uganda was represented by St Mary’s Secondary School, Kitende and Kawempe Muslim Secondary School in the boys and girls categories respectively.

In the boys’ category, Uganda defeated Tanzania 4-2 in penalties after a 1-all draw while girls beat Kenya 2-1

The two sides will represent Uganda at the finals that will be held in April next year in Egypt.

They also received US$10,000 each for qualifying for the finals.

St Mary’s coach Daniel Male hailed the character of his players.

“We managed to live up to the task. This was our target when we came to compete in this competition. We knew what we wanted and that’s what we have shown. Despite winning we also played well. We now want to see how we shall perform better in the finals. I know it might be too early but we have to prepare in time,” noted Male.

Ashraf Kyakuwa was the MVP in the boys category while Simon Wanyama was the top scorer with 7 goals

Shadia Nabirye who was has Kawempe Muslim top player managed to finish the tournament with 5 goals.

Coach Moses Nkata feels the players followed the technical team’s instructions.

“When we shared spoils in our first game we didn’t lose hope. We continued to believe in ourselves that we would bounce back which we did. The girls also followed the instructions of the technical team. This is a big achievement for Uganda since these players are going to get exposure,” stated Nkata
