Ever since the Uganda School Sports Association (USSSA) adopted a mass participation strategy, the country has consistently increased its representation at international sporting events.

On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, Uganda’s Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwanga, officially flagged off a record-breaking 1690 athletes to compete in the 21st Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games.

The event, hosted at the iconic Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, witnessed a significant milestone as it was confirmed that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will grace the opening ceremony.

“My children, I am sending you to represent Uganda,” Minister Ogwanga addressed the athletes. “The games will be opened by the President of the Republic of Uganda. It would be a huge disappointment if we don’t excel.”

The 1690 participants, comprising athletes, officials, and organizers from 60 schools, surpass the previous record of 1300 athletes sent to Huye, Rwanda, in 2023. This unprecedented number underscores Uganda’s growing dominance in regional sports.

USSSA President Justus Mugisha, also a prominent FEASSSA leader, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure a fourth consecutive and fifth overall FEASSSA title. With the games being hosted on home soil at Bukedea Comprehensive and Amus College, Uganda is eager to impress.

“It is a great honor to host these games in Uganda, and having President Museveni officially open the event is historic,” Mugisha added.

The 21st FEASSSA Games will commence on August 16, 2024, with official reporting, and competitive action will begin on August 17. The event will feature teams from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
