Uganda She Cranes Announce Final Squad for 2023 Netball World Cup

The Uganda Women’s netball team, the She Cranes, have announced their final squad for the 2023 Netball World Cup.

The tournament will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, from July 28 to August 6.

The 15-player squad includes 3 reserves. The only foreign-based player in the squad is Mary Nuba Cholhok, who plays for Lightning UK. Peace Proscovia and Stella Oyella are unavailable due to injury.

The She Cranes have been training in a residential camp in preparation for the World Cup. Coach Fred Mugerwa said that the focus is now on finalizing the starting lineup and working on combinations.

“The current players are talented, and they will perform,” said Mugerwa.

“We need to encourage them and continue training, and prepare them for that competition.”

This will be the third consecutive appearance for the She Cranes at the World Cup. They made their return to the tournament in 2015 after 36 years, following their debut in 1979.

The She Cranes final squad is as follows:

Shooters:

  • Irene Eyaru (captain) (KCCA)
  • Mary Nuba (Lightning UK)
  • Namulumba Christine Kango (Prisons NC)
  • Shadia Nassanga (KCCA)

Mid court players:

  • Norah Lunkuse (KCCA)
  • Lillian Achola (Weyonje NC)
  • Margret Baagala (NIC and assistant captain)

Defenders:

  • Hanisha Muhammad (KCCA)
  • Nakitto Christine (KCCA)
  • Stella Nanfuka (Prisons)
  • Kadondi Faridah.(Weyonje NC)
  • Shaffie Nalwanja (KCCA)

Reserves:

  • Asingo Viola (Prisons NC)
  • Annet Najjuka (KCCA)
  • Sarah Nakiyunga (NIC)
  • The She Cranes will be hoping to make a strong showing at the World Cup and will be competing in Pool B along with Australia, Malawi, and Northern Ireland.

The tournament is sure to be a closely contested affair, with many of the world’s top netball teams vying for the title.

The She Cranes will be looking to make their mark on the world stage and show that they are a force to be reckoned with.
