2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers | Group D
- Angola 90-68 Uganda
The Uganda Silverbacks struggled on opening night of the FIBA 2027 World Cup Qualifiers, falling 90-68 to a dominant Angola side at Borg Elarab Arena in Alexandria, Egypt on Thursday.
Uganda’s game unraveled through 35 costly turnovers, which Angola converted into 40 points.
The former African champions’ physicality and relentless full court press kept the Silverbacks under pressure, disrupting any rhythm.
Angola set the tone early with a 17-0 run before Fayed Baale finally scored for Uganda with a three-pointer.
By the end of the first quarter, Angola led 27-13, exposing Uganda’s struggles on both ends.
The Silverbacks showed brief resistance in the second quarter. Nike Sibande energized the team with a dunk and a floating jump shot on the break. Uganda moved the ball cleaner but still trailed 45-27 at halftime.
Any hope of a second-half comeback faded as Angola’s disciplined defense and well executed screens widened the gap to 72-45 heading into the final quarter.
Uganda fought back late, opening the fourth period on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 75-60 with 6 minutes remaining, forcing an Angola timeout.
But Angola quickly responded with 15 unanswered points, quashing Uganda’s rally before Peter Obleng’s late three pointer. The final buzzer confirmed a 27-point win for Angola.
Selton Miguel led Angola with 19 points, supported by Childe Dundao (15), Kevin Kokila (13), Islando Manuel (11), and Abou Gakou (10). For Uganda, Deng Geu scored 17, Nike Sibande 15, and Joel Kayira 10.
Uganda’s Silverbacks will play their next game against Mali on Saturday February 28
