Uganda starts strong at Africa School Games in Algeria

Uganda has made a strong start at the inaugural Africa School Games, delivering standout performances across several sports in Algeria.

The highlight came in Table Tennis, where Imran Luwooza swept aside Algeria’s Abdelhine Merouane 3-0 with confident set wins of 11-09, 11-07, and 11-08 in a Group B match.

In Badminton, Uganda faced a tough Ghanaian team and lost 4-1. Upcoming group matches against hosts Algeria who beat Tunisia 5-0 and Tunisia will determine Uganda’s fate.

Swimming action begins Monday, July 28. Paula Nabukeera and Abigail Mwagale will compete in the 50m Freestyle, while Elijah Wamala and Joshua Mandre take on the 50m Butterfly.

Mandre also partners with Kodet Tumusiime in the 100m Backstroke. Tumusiime returns for the 200m Breaststroke.

Uganda is also in the mix in Athletics and Football, with knockout rounds set for Monday and relay finals on Tuesday.

The Africa School Games are being held across four Algerian cities; Annaba, Constantine, Setif, and Skikda, and feature over 3,000 athletes aged 14 to 17 from 44 African countries, competing in 25 Olympic sports.

Organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the Games aim to spotlight Africa’s rising sports talent.
