Uganda made a perfect start at the CAVB Zone V Beach Volleyball Championship in Bujumbura, defeating regional rivals Kenya 2-0 in their opening women’s match on Thursday at Eden Garden Resort.
The Ugandan pair of Nancy Chebet and Peace Busingye dominated from start to finish, beating Kenya’s Esther Mwise and Ann Akiru Ekuam in straight sets (21-13, 21-06).
Their strong serves and seamless teamwork kept the Kenyans under pressure throughout the match.
Captain Peace Busingye was delighted with the performance, crediting their powerful serves for the win.
“Our first match against Kenya was good. We trained to serve hard, and it paid off. That’s what made the difference today,” she said.
Busingye added that the team would maintain the same approach as the tournament progresses.
“We’re going to keep serving hard and working together as Team Uganda, taking one game at a time with the goal of reaching the finals.”
Head coach Edward Bwenje praised his players for executing the game plan perfectly.
“Being the first day of the tournament, our ladies did exactly what we prepared for, serving hard and fighting for every point until the end,” he said.
“We thank God for the win and now focus on the next matches.”
Bwenje also revealed that Uganda’s men’s team would play later in the afternoon against hosts Burundi, while the women prepare to face Burundi 3 in their next fixture.
“This is a round-robin format, so every win matters,” he noted.
“Burundi will have home support, but our girls are ready to fight for every point.”
