The Uganda U-18 Women’s National Team defeated Zanzibar 3-0 in their second game of the CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship on Thursday to go top of the table.

Second half goals from Brenda Munyana, Agnes Nabukenya and Phionah Nabulime gave Uganda a deserved win over Zanzibar in the game played at Azam Complex.

End to End encounter in the first half

The first chance of the game came in the 7th minute when Brenda Munyana released Kamiyat Naigaga who beat her defender with pace but failed to score in a one-on-one situation when her low shot went inches wide.

Eight minutes later, Zanzibar’s forward Rahma Nassor scored a beautiful goal, a first time lob to beat the goalkeeper, but she was flagged offside.

Uganda came close to scoring but was denied by a double-save from the Zanzibar goalkeeper Aisha Said, first from a powerful shot inside the box by Shamusa Najjuma, and then Kamiyat Naigaga’s rebound.

Uganda had more chances to score before the break but the players were not clinical enough as the first stanza of the game ended square.

Quickfire goals End Zanzibar’s resistance

Uganda finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when defender Agnes Milanzi miscalculated a cross from a free kick, allowing the quick Brenda Munyana to fired the ball into the top right corner.

Three minutes later, Agnes Nabukenya doubled the lead when she picked the ball inside the box and sent a powerful shot into the back of the net.

Midfielder Agnes Nabukenya and Patricia Nayiga had chances to net the third goal but Zanzibar’s defense was equal to the task.

In the 83rd minute, Phionah Nabulime was fouled in the box and referee awarded a penalty to Uganda, which Nabulime herself converted beautifully to put the lead beyond doubt.

The centre referee Suzana Semere Yohannes blew the full time whitsle as Uganda picked her second win of the championship to keep their eyes on the prize.

Uganda is now on top of the table with 6 points and four goals, 3 points and 3 goals above second placed Tanzania who takes on wounded Ethiopia this evening at 6pm at Azam Complex.

The CECAFA U-18 Women’s Championship is a round-robin tournament, with the team with the most points at the end of the tournament being crowned champions.
