The Junior Silverbacks have booked their ticket to the 2025 FIBA U16 African Championship in Rwanda, following a hard-fought qualification campaign in Kibaha, Tanzania, a journey marked not only by determination on the court but also resilience off it.

An unwelcome start

The Uganda U16 Boys team arrived in Tanzania on Wednesday night to an unexpected ordeal: no accommodation had been prepared for them by the hosts.

Stranded, the team was forced to seek shelter, eventually sleeping in the bus and later on the floor of a common room at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School.

Despite this rough start, the boys remained spirited. Their resolve was further strengthened by a defiant speech now dubbed the “Hudson rant” where Uganda’s delegation fiercely confronted FIBA Africa Zone V officials over the mishap. It sent a clear message that Uganda would not be taken lightly.

Statement victory against Kenya

The campaign tipped off against Kenya, who themselves had only just arrived, visibly disorganized.

The first half saw Uganda narrowly lead 28-25, but a fatigue-stricken Kenyan side began to crumble under Uganda’s second-half pressure.

The Junior Silverbacks capitalized on turnovers and built a commanding lead, eventually sealing a 63-36 win.

Learning from loss to Rwanda

Next up was Rwanda, but with qualification riding on the final game against Tanzania, Uganda rested key players. Though they lost 91-64, the match served as a valuable learning experience.

The coaching staff used film sessions to highlight mistakes, reinforcing the team’s tactical discipline and reminding them of the real mission ahead.

Winner takes all: Uganda Vs Tanzania

With both teams having beaten Kenya, the showdown against hosts Tanzania became a winner-takes-all affair. Tanzania, without star player Ramadhani Ibrahim due to suspected age cheating, came out firing and led 17-11 after the first quarter. But Uganda remained calm.

Led by the tactical brilliance of twins Shane and Shammah Kwizera who combined for 16 assists and sniper Shyaka Evans Rugare who drilled six three-pointers, Uganda turned the tide.

They outscored Tanzania 21-12 in the second quarter and completely dominated the third, opening up an insurmountable lead.

Big man Joshua Bwakanda added a powerful 16-point and 11-rebound performance while Silver Odoi anchored the defense with the highest impact, playing over 36 minutes. The final score: 71-45.

With the win, Uganda secured their spot at the African Championship set to be held in Kigali later this year.

In the last edition, Uganda finished 10th, winning just one game. But this time, buoyed by a stronger roster and the proximity of the tournament to home, there is renewed hope.
