The Uganda badminton team left a mark at the Cotonou arts, culture and leisure hall as they had a taste of all the three medal brackets at the Benin International Badminton Tournament 2023.
Uganda and success at both continental and global sports events are synonymous irrespective of the sport discipline and this was evident once again in Benin.
The three days action saw Gladys Mbabazi and Husina Kobugabe win a Gold medal in Women Doubles while Brian Kasirye settled for a silver medal in the Men Singles.
Mbabazi and Kobugabe defeated a Nigerian pair to claim gold and listen to the Ugandan anthem.
Kobugabe had another chance to reach the finals but settled for bronze after falling to an Egyptian player in the Women’s Singles.
“We are grateful for the gold medal and the support back home. We also want to thank our teammates plus those who made it possible for us to come and participate in this tournament,” Mbabazi noted.
Still about raising the Ugandan flag high, Tracy Naluwooza and Fadilah Shamika won a bronze medal in Women Doubles to complete a return journey back home with heavy necks.
