The Uganda Women’s Basketball Team, the Gazelles, have been named the second most improved team by FIBA at the FIBA Awards ceremony held in Manila, Philippines on Wednesday.
The Gazelles were recognized for their impressive improvement between 2021 and July 2023, finishing just behind Slovenia in wthe National Federation Progression Aard (female category).
Tanzania, Portugal, and Samoa tied for third place.
The Gazelles have been in great form in recent months, clinching a spot in the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket in Kigali, Rwanda. They also finished seventh at the tournament, their best ever finish at the continental showpiece.
The Gazelles’ improvement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, coaches, and administrators. It is also a sign of the growing popularity of basketball in Uganda.
In other awards, the United States was named the top-ranked women’s national federation, while Spain took top honors for the men.
The United States also won the 3×3 combined award, which recognizes the top-ranked national federation for both men and women.
